The next Southampton 24-7 Prayer Week hits the streets

There is another citywide 24-7 Prayer Week happening in Southampton from 8pm on Saturday 23rd August until 8pm on Saturday 30th August. Organised by the Southampton 24-7 Prayer team, the prayer room will be at Orchard Lane Church (just off East Street in the City Centre, SO14 3BN). You can find out all the details on their website and sign up to fill some prayer slots. It would be great to involve as many different people as possible from across the city, so get your church on board and spread the word!

In addition to a 24-7 Prayer Room, there will be organised sessions taking place in other parts of the building morning and afternoon, Monday to Friday. This will allow opportunities to engage with local people and families, while maintaining the prayer room as a quiet space for people to be with God. The plan is to have open tea, coffee and cake mornings with children's activities from 10am-12noon, and then there will be activities for young people such as games, drumming or dance workshops from 2-4pm.

What's happening in Southampton with 24-7 Prayer?
In Southampton a community has been growing around the concept of 24-7 prayer. We believe that God is calling his church in Southampton to join together in prayer and we believe that it is by faithfully and persistently being with Jesus in prayer that His transforming power will transform us to change the landscape of our city. We are establishing a rhythm of 24-7 prayer weeks that will happen throughout the year in Southampton. People sign up to pray for at least an hour each, and pass on the 'prayer-baton'. We believe that mission is birthed in prayer, and if you fancy the challenge of spending a whole hour alone with God, or even with friends seeking his heart for the lost – then sign up! In addition to hosting prayer weeks, the 24-7 prayer community meet weekly on a Thursday evening at Orchard Lane Church to eat together, share life together and pray. We also pray every other Wednesday night on the City walls, 11pm-1am, meeting at Catchcold Tower (in a car park between Portland Terrace and Castle Way). All are welcome, for more information contact Katie Coles on katiecoles1@yahoo.co.uk.

An Evening of Blues and Gospel with Bob Pearce

On Saturday, September 20th 2008, one of Southampton’s hidden architectural gems - St Denys Church - hosts a unique evening's entertainment with one of the city’s best loved ‘hidden’ musicians and blues legend, the irrepressible Bob Pearce and his band.

During his three year ‘retirement’ from the business shortly after the 1998 release of “Why Am I Hollerin”, and with his reputation as king of the Home Cooked Blues intact, Bob Pearce reflected on his faith and his career in music. Inspired by his love for Jesus, and with the loyal support of Blues Etc, Bob returned to the studio to record 2005’s “Unchained" - his first album as a Christian artist. In 2007, Bob and his friends recorded a second album of gospel songs “Making My Way Back Home” (FPCD011) and resumed a selected programme of dates around the Solent.

During 2008, St Denys Church celebrates 140 years of service to the community. With one of the largest unaltered internal spaces in the city, this magnificent Victorian building hosts medieval artefacts, one of the largest pipe organs in Hampshire dating back to 1750, and an architectural heritage to match - it was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, creator of such landmarks as St Pancras Station in London and the Martyr's Memorial in Oxford. God’s plan for the building at St Denys saw it rescued from nine years of closure in 2006, opened once again for services and occasional performance events. The church’s superb acoustics and vast interior make it ideal for all kinds of live music, worship and drama.

Martin Smith, churchwarden, says: “We are really honoured that a local musician with such an international pedigree as Bob Pearce should accept our invitation to witness his new faith and present his testimony in music at our church. His story and journey to Christ reflects our own recent history, and it is fitting that these two Southampton icons should at last come together. With His grace, Bob’s showcase concert will demonstrate to a mixed audience the versatility and awe-inspiring potential of this beautiful building.”

Doors 7pm. Tickets £5.00 (unreserved seating/standing. Some views are restricted). Available from Southampton Guildhall Box Office on 023 8063 2601 (booking fees apply), or in person from St Denys Church, Dundee Road.
